Justice Bill Crackdown on Irresponsible Drinking
The Social Development Minister Alex Attwood has outlined proposals to crack down on harmful drinking.
“I want to introduce minimum pricing for alcohol in clubs, pubs and supermarkets but also, on a larger scale, I want to target those retailers who sell alcohol below cost price in order to encourage higher footfall and therefore generate sales,” he said.
“Selling alcohol at minimal prices encourages people to drink irresponsibly, with damaging knock-on effects on themselves and in society.” Legislative proposals will “piggy-back” on the Justice Bill which comes before the Assembly in the autumn.

Pub Conversion To Residential Property in Swaffham
The owners of a Swaffham pub have drafted plans to see whether councillors will agree to the principle of converting the building into a house.
The draft proposals are to convert the pub for residential use, with part of an existing rear extension demolished to maximise the size of the garden. Meanwhile, a new detached house is proposed to be built on the current car park.
Although the ideas are at a very early stage, pub campaigners said they were saddened at the possibility that the Norfolk Hero could become one of the 39 pubs estimated to be closing every week across the country.
No specific details have been submitted about the design of the proposed house, but the planning statement says it would reflect the appearance of the pub.

Pro Pub MP Calls For Pub Minister
Pro-pub MP Greg Mulholland has written to David Cameron asking him to appoint a pubs minister and implement policies to help community pubs, reports the Morning Advertiser.
In his letter, the chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group flagged up consumer affairs minister Ed Davey confirming the Government's commitment to reform the beer tie.
"I hope that you will now confirm which other aspects of [then pubs minister] John Healey’s plan will be carried forwards over the coming Parliament," the letter says.
Areas include providing greater protection for pubs under threat of demolition and banning sales of pubs with restrictive covenants.
The letter adds: "It is also imperative that the Government ensures that pubs receive the recognition they deserve through the retention of a dedicated minister for pubs."
That minister "could ensure joined-up thinking across Government by bringing together the many departments with responsibility to pubs, including on licensing, planning and competition issues".

Marstons Announce On Target Results
Despite the wettest ever July, pub and brewery group Marston's, which owns the Pitcher &Piano chain, said it remains on track to meet expectations for the current financial year.
Trading across all three of its divisions - managed pubs, tenanted and leased pubs, and brewing - is said to be improving.Pub operators throughout the UK have struggled through the recession during the past two years as weaker consumer confidence and low-price offers from the supermarkets have convinced many drinkers to stay at home.
Marston's said it remained on course to meet its target to add 60 large managed pub-restaurants within three years, with 15 expected to open by the end of the financial year.

Freehold pubs and hotels for sale
The UK commercial property market is being flooded with run down, derelict, empty or vacant freehold pub, clubs, wine bars, retaurants and hotels as a combination of cheap beer in supermarkets, rising costs and the smoking ban have taken their toll on the licensed trade.
The coming months may see the acceleration of the pace of pub closures as pub landlords, breweries and pub companies such as Admiral Taverns, Greene King, Marstons, Scottish & Newcastle, Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns face up to the pressures of the credit crunch.
