Pubcos Struggle

Britain's biggest pubs group, said it would not pay a dividend in the current year and expected trading conditions to remain challenging, sending its shares down 11 percent on Tuesday.

The company stopped paying dividends in May 2009 to help reduce crippling debt of nearly £4 billion . Enterprise Inns disposed of 579 pubs during its fiscal year, raising 166 million pounds and generated proceeds of £114 million through a sale and leaseback programme. This helped it reduce net debt by £374 million to £3.3 billion.

Its estate now stands at 6,820 pubs valued at £5bn. Punch sold off 43 pubs during its year and has an estate of around 6,500. Both said that they intend to continue disposing of non-core pubs in the near-term.

Another rival, Mitchells & Butlers, announced yesterday that it has completed the sale of 330 "drinks-led" pubs to Stonegate Pub Co.

Do children ruin a trip to the local pub?

Pub landlords increasingly have to deal with abusive and aggressive behaviour from parents who have been asked to keep their children quiet, according to the Good Pub Guide.

But does the presence of children ruin a visit to the local? Or does it make it more enjoyable? The BBC's Tim Muffett has been finding out.

Community Pubs Minister Appointment

The position of pubs minister has been brought back by the government after calls from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).Conservative MP, Bob Neill, will take up the role previously filled by John Healey, which was scrapped after the last election.

Neill stated: "The local pub is a great British institution and the social heartbeat of life in our towns and villages, bringing people together and strengthening community relationships.

“As minister with responsibility for pubs, I am determined to protect the valuable role pubs play and help them to thrive.”

CAMRA’s head of policy and public affairs, Jonathan Mail, said that the group was “delighted” with the change in government thinking.

“It is vital that the pub and beer sector has a powerful voice within government to help oppose calls for ever higher taxes and restrictions on pub opening houses.

“The government also has a role in creating an environment which enables pubs to succeed and helping communities save valued pubs under threat of closure,” he added.

Other British beer and pub associations were quick to announce their satisfaction with the news, claiming it showed how seriously the government took the threat of pub closures.

Essex Council to Help Local Pubs

The Morning Advertiser reports that Licensees of rural pubs can apply for 50% grants of up to £5,000 for those who want to develop essential services under the Council’s Rural Enterprise Fund.

The scheme mirrors similar initiatives that operate elsewhere but this is the first to be launched since it was revealed that local government budgets would be slashed in the Comprehensive Spending Review.

John Longden, chief executive of Pub is The Hub, which has been involved in the scheme, said: “We are delighted to be working with partners in Essex to help retain and improve local services, helping businesses thrive and bringing residents together via the pub as the heart of the community.”

Hosts can find out about the funding at an open day on Thursday 4 November at the Essex Village Shops and Pubs Day in Danbury Village Hall, near Chelmsford.

Pub is the Hub advisor Terry Stork is due to attend the event, hosted by the Rural Community Council of Essex, to provide advice for licensees.

Bars to create pub jobs for British Pub Week?

Bars across the UK could soon be creating more pub jobs as they prepare for the start of British Pub Week.

Running from October 30th to November 6th, the week aims to celebrate the role that pubs play in the local communities and society as a whole.

"Pubs are so much more than places that sell alcohol, they are unique and they are for all - from the old-timer who visits his pub to see his pals, to the families, couples and friends who meet up for special occasions," founder of British Pub Week, Inez Ward, told Punch Taverns.

She went on to say that uniting all members of the pub industry in preparing for the week had been a "fantastic experience".

Earlier this month, auctioneer Mark Jenkinson & Son told the Star that more pubs will start to be put up for sale in South Yorkshire over the coming months.

Whitbread Reports Jump in Sales and Profits

Pub and restaurant operator Whitbread has reported a near 30 per cent rise in its pre-tax profits in the last six months, reports the Publican

Reporting half year financials to September 2, the Beefeater and Brewers Fayre-owner said total revenue was up 14.5 per cent to £805.4m from £703.3 in the previous six months.

Over the same period, like-for-like sales were up 7.8 per cent.

Profits before tax were £151.8m – up 28.4 per cent from £118.2m.

Whitbread chairman Anthony Habgood said the increase was down to the company adapting its business model to offer more value deals during the recession.

Greene King Ads Back "Proper" Pubs

Greene King has launched a major £1.5m national press advertising campaign extolling the virtues of its “proper pubs”, reports the Morning Advertiser.

It is the first major national media pub campaign since Greene King sponsored Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway a few years ago.The campaign launched at the weekend and will run for six weeks across a variety of broadsheet and tabloid titles - and it will be repeated in the Spring.

There are a total of six different full-page adverts, each talking about the unique service and experience that a pub offers.

“The Parched Hound” advert, for example, reminds consumers that any of its pubs will happily provide a water bowl for your dog — “All you need to do is ask”.“The Glass on the Grass” advert, which appears in the Daily Telegraph this morning, reminds consumers that “pints in plastic aren’t proper”.

Greene King chief executive Rooney Anand said the campaign derives from research that shows consumers want very traditional things from their pubs.

The company’s research had shown the word that consumers use most regularly in relation to their notion of an outstanding pub is “proper”.He said the campaign was a signal that Greene King wanted to invest in the pub market and is timed with British Pub Week in mind — it runs between 30 October and 6 November.

Local Councils May Gain Control of Alcohol Pricing

Local councils are set to get the abililty to crack down on cheap alcohol.

The Government is reported to be considering moves to let councils block alcohol offers at supermarkets and off licences if they are dramatically undercutting prices charged at pubs.

It follows a report which exposes the easy availability of cut-price booze in the UK and the damage it is doing to the nation's collective health.

Prime Minister David Cameron is already backing plans by ten councils in the North West to create a by-law making it illegal to sell alcohol for less than 50p a unit.

He said: "I think the idea of the councils coming together on this is a good one and we will certainly look at it very sympathetically."

Punch Taverns Sell Off 1300 puBs

The Guardian is reporting that Punch Taverns have plans to sell 1300 pubs following the announcement of losses of £160 million.

New Chief Executive Ian Dyson said he wanted to stabilise the business -- where pubs have been battling the ill-effects of a smoking ban, duty increases and recession -- by increasing food sales, reducing debt and pruning its ailing tenanted estate to a core of 4,700 pubs over the next two to four years.

That would be a 40 percent reduction of its leased estate since a peak of 7,500 pubs three years ago.

CAMRA Demands Supermarket Alcohol Levy

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is asking the government to consider a levy on alcohol sold in supermarkets. The suggestion that there should be a levy on the bottles and cans sales in the off-trade come at the same time as requests that the government review of alcohol taxes.

CAMRA has also suggested a “preferential” duty rate on draught drinks sold in pubs.
It has repeated its demand for an end to the duty escalator and wants an introduction of a “long-term strategy to reduce the level of taxation on beer to support the viability of brewers and community pubs” as well as the ratio between beer and spirits tax to return to “1995 levels”.

“The introduction of the beer duty escalator has imposed significant harm on pubs and pub-going responsible drinkers without meaningfully reducing problem drinking,” the submission stated.

UK Pub News; BBPA Predict 43,000 Job Losses

Pub closures are inreasing say BBPA - predicting 43,000 sector job losses over next 5 years. Britain's cash-strapped pubs groups, faced with the toughest trading conditions for years, look set to accelerate pub closures as the government turns the screws and presses ahead with planned tax rises.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has said closures across the UK are running at 5 a day, up a third on last year, with close to 1,900 of the country's 57,000 pubs set to shut this year if the current rate continues.

The industry is angry with the government for pressing ahead with tax rises when it is facing the toughest trading conditions for years with pressure on household budgets, last year's smoking ban, cheap alcohol offers in supermarkets, and the miserable summer weather encouraging drinkers to stay at home.

70% of Pubs Want Smoking Ban Lifting

More than 70% of pub operators want the smoking ban to be lifted, according to a new survey by pro-choice organisation freedom2choose, reports the Morning Advertiser.

The survey, which interviewed 570 licensees across England, found that only 8% wanted a full ban but 72% were in favour of a separate smoking room.

Statistics from the survey suggest that smoking customers still hold significance in pubs, with approximately 37% of all licensees believing that three quarters or more of their customers were smokers.

A total of 90% of core customers in Northern and Midland pubs are also said to be smokers. However, the survey represents just over 1% of the UK pub market.

Cultural consultant Dr Ruth Cherrington said: "There is plenty of room for change within this law, which would ensure a fairer 'playing field' for all and a virtual cessation of pub closures."
