CAMRA hails Big Society Support for Community Owned Pubs
This morning the Prime Minister gave a speech on the Big Society, endorsing pubs as local assets and promising Government support for communities wishing to save threatened pubs through community ownership.
Community ownership for pubs would not only be invaluable in saving pubs threatened with closure but there is clearly an appetite for it. CAMRA's recent polling research shows that 63% of regular pub goers would be willing to join efforts to save their favourite local pub if it was under threat.
CAMRA has therefore welcomed this morning's announcement, and has written to the Government seeking assurances that the Big Society will be backed up with adequate resources to provide business, legal and financial advice to communities wishing to save their pub by running it as a mutual, co-operative or social enterprise.
Jonathan Mail, CAMRA's Head of Policy and Public Affairs said:
"Pubs provide the vibrant heart of many communities and provide an invaluable meeting place and the centre for countless local activities. The loss of such pubs can be devastating to community spirit and identity and Government has a key role to play in enabling communities to come together to save their local pubs."

Pub Redevelopment Plans in Harwich
Plans to demolish a closed down pub to make way for affordable homes have been submitted to Tendring Council.
Developer Gipping Construction is seeking to build 12 houses and two flats on the Main Road site in Dovercourt. The plans, submitted earlier this month, will mean knocking down The White Horse, which closed down last year.
Under the proposed plans, parking spaces would also be created for 28 cars and 22 bicycles at the site.Seven of the houses would have three bedrooms, three would have four bedrooms or more and the remaining would be two-bedroom homes.
Dave Rutson, ward councillor for Harwich West Central, welcomed the latest development. He said: “There’s a desperate need for housing in the area.“We know the days of pubs are diminishing. There are fewer and fewer because they can’t survive.
“It’s far better to have something there that’s needed.

Action on Supermarket Alcohol Pricing
The Government plans to overhaul licensing and ban below-cost alcohol sales by November 2011.A so-called Draft Structural Reform Plan from the Home Office, released today, sets a timetable of reform for the new coalition. Reports the Morning Advertiser
It says consultations to "overhaul" the Licensing Act to grant greater powers to remove and refuse licences to problem premises started in June and will continue until September. Legislation would be carried through via the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill from October 2010 until November 2011.
Options for "alcohol taxation and pricing" with be developed with the business department and Treasury from last month until April 2011, with changes introduced at this point.
Options for banning below-cost sales, will be discussed with other Government departments until November 2010.
Legislation "if necessary" will be introduced in November 2011.

The World Cup Impact on Business
An analysis by The Daily Telegraph in June showed that 33 companies had referred to the World Cup in stock exchange announcements as having 'a material effect on their business.'
Not surprisingly, eight of these companies were bookmakers, who could always expect a big sports tournament bonanza. ITV, Sports Retailers and of course Pub Companies were also expecting a profitable month. Even though the England Team didn't do a great deal for profits after their Qualifying Round exit, pubs would continue to benefit from the Tournament with PricewaterhouseCoopers reporting that a fifth of all people watch the World Cup in a pub!
Pubcos such as Punch Taverns, Greene King and Fuller's,have said in recent weeks that the good summer weather and football World Cup boosted sales. Meanwhile JD Wetherspoons which doesn't usually show sporting events at its pubs reported that the world cup had little impact on business.
The biggest winners have been the economies of The Netherlands and Spain, according to BloombergBusiness; Their national economies will have received a boost simply from being a finalist, but economists have forecast that Spain's triumph could add as much as 0.25 percentage point to annual economic growth. “Dutch consumers, traditionally conservative spenders, will become euphoric if the country wins the World Cup, boosting economic growth as they step up spending,” On the other hand, “Spain could prevent full-year economic contraction by winning,” said Schotsman, the author of an April report titled “Soccernomics 2010” that predicted a Spanish triumph this year.

Ex-pats Lured Home by Flexible Pub Leases
Ex-licensees who left to work abroad are returning to take on UK pubs, according to three tenanted operators, reports the Morning Advertiser;
The UK’s improving economy and more flexible leases have been cited as reasons.Oliver and Samantha Knott have returned from Malaysia to take on a three-year Hall & Woodhouse tenancy at the Scarlett Arms, Walliswood, Surrey.
Knott said signs of a recovery from the UK recession meant the time to return was right. “We always wanted to run a food-based business and considered doing it in Malaysia, but the competition is huge. Also we wanted to get the kids into school in England.”
Knott said all the pubcos and brewers he had contacted were offering incentives. Matt Kearsey, head of Hall & Woodhouse’s tenanted division, Badger Pubs, said a couple returning from Spain had signed up on a pub in Billingshurst, West Sussex. “We’ve had about six applications from abroad in the past six months, and appointed two.”
Former host John Jeram-Silvey returned from Spain after his printing company in the Canary Islands closed.“Tourism fell 30% and, since there’s no support structure in Spain for British citizens, I came back.”

Pub Insolvency Down By a Third
Cateresearch reports that Pub insolvency rates are down a third from the height of the recession but Government spending cuts and a slowdown in consumer spending could tip more businesses over the edge, a survey has warned.
According to research from consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the insolvency rate in the pub sector peaked in the last quarter of 2009, when 88 pubs businesses failed.
The research, which examined pub companies rather than individual operators, found that the rate of insolvency dropped by 32% in the second quarter of 2010. However, it warned the level of failure was still "comparatively high", up nearly 10% compared with 2008.
David Chubb, a partner at PwC, said that while pub company insolvency rates had fallen, trading remained difficult.
"The insolvency stats do not fully illustrate the extent of the problems in the sector as much underlying restructuring activity continues. Even without entering insolvency, creditors may still experience pain," he said.
Meanwhile restaurant company insolvencies are up 30% compared with two years ago, with the second quarter of 2010 up 5% on the first three months of the year.
"While the propensity to dine out is still very much a part of UK culture, the pursuit of value for money by the consumer has led to even high-end restaurants in London laying on fixed menus and other offers usually seen in casual dining," Chubb said.
