Pub campaigners have backed a Government review into a controversial restrictions used by Breweries which prevents sold-off pubs re-opening.
Pubs Minister Bob Neill has ordered a public consultation into restrictive covenants after saying the practice deprived communities of ‘important places to get together’.
Restrictive covenants are used by the seller of a pub to prevent the buyer from continuing to run the premises as a pub. This practice is used to restrict competition in local areas and deprives our communities of their pubs. Between 2004 and 2009 almost 600 pubs were sold with restrictive covenants.
This is a great step forward in this campaign which CAMRA has been fighting for 30 years, and a great success for localism. The move shows that Government recognises that pubs are vital community assets that need to be protected.
