Pubs stand to lose out by thousands of pounds after England's exit from the World Cup.
Businesses who had hoped for a bonanza if the Three Lions progressed to the quarter-finals and beyond are now glumly preparing for trade to return to normal.

While The British Beer and Pub Association estimated that a good run by Fabio Capello's team could have been worth an extra £124m to the pub industry, and a single match could see a pub's takings nearly double..

Bars and pubs have been packed with patriotic punters cheering on Wayne Rooney and his teammates during their rocky ride in South Africa, and a quarter-final match against Argentina at 3pm on Saturday would have meant another full house.

Capital Pub Co. Buy London Pubs

Capital Pub Company, the London pub operator, is set to buy Tomahawk, a rival pub group, for £5.03m in cash, reports the Publican.

The pubs had been run by Geronimo Inns, and this arrangement has now been terminated. Staff at both pubs will transfer into the employment of Capital, the group said today.

Capital said that for the 44 week period to May 2, 2010, the combined turnover of Tomahawk's two pubs was £2.1m, versus £1.9m in 2009. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose from £404,649 to £551,854.

James Bruxner, Capital’s chairman, said his company had been actively seeking to grow the business through the acquisition of further freehold pubs.

Pubs are celebrating with relief after Jermain Defoe’s goal against Slovenia rescued the trade from a disastrous World Cup.

Such was the suspected ease of England’s qualifying group – which also contained football minnows the USA and Algeria – that many pubs had budgeted for increased takings from at least four World Cup matches.

However, after two limp draws before yesterday’s decisive fixture it was looking as if England could fall at the first hurdle.

Failure to get past the group stage would have been devastating for thousands of pubs, many of which have built their summer around a successful campaign.

Defoe’s winning goal was worth millions to the trade as it set up a second round clash with Germany that will boost trade for many pubs on Sunday lunchtime and evening.

Ian Payne, chairman of Town & City Pub Company, which owns brands such as Yates’s and Litten Tree, said the Slovenia game was worth £425,000 for the business.And Mark Daniels, licensee of the Tharp Arms in Chippenham, Newmarket, said the victory could potentially see takings trebled on Sunday.

UK Pub Industry Welcome Beer Duty Freeze

The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has welcomed the coalition government’s decision to freeze alcohol duty.

Chief executive Brigid Simmonds said that the move will help the move came as a relief.

She said: “We applaud the government’s decision to freeze beer tax and deliver on its promise made in the coalition agreement to not penalise pubs, responsible drinkers and important local industries. This is a welcome relief for struggling pubs during difficult times.

“A beer tax freeze will also help the beer and pub sector’s ability to play its part in contributing to much needed economic growth and generating valuable private sector jobs."

Osborne, has however, hiked VAT by 2.5 per cent – a move Labour described as a tax on the poor.

Simmonds said: “The VAT rise is a price to pay for tackling the deficit and bringing Britain’s balance sheet back in order. This tax increase is not welcome, but is understandable and applies to everybody. We hope this will be short-term pain for long-term gain.

Save the Pub MPs call for Smoking Ban Relaxation

The newly re-elected All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group vice chairman and MP for Northampton South wants the law to be changed to allow smoking in separate well-ventilated rooms.

He will push forward with his campaign in the run up to the three-year re-evaluation of the ban this autumn.

“The way Parliament handled the situation for pubs and clubs was draconian, crude and crass,” said Binley, who is a non-smoking asthmatic.

Binley said he understood the health implications of smoking indoors, but that advanced extraction systems were capable of dealing with second hand smoke.

World Cup Dress Code an Issue in Reading Pubs

Reading Police plan to speak to pubs in the town about their policies for fans wearing football shirts after England matches. A spokesman said “One issue that has been identified was a number of venues welcomed fans wearing football shirts during the match, but once it finished they were given an option of either changing or going elsewhere. We will work with those venues this week to clarify what their clothing policy is and to ensure that customers are informed of the policy up front.”

The major bars showing matches all said they welcomed fans in football shirts but policies varied.

There were no serious incidents in town on Saturday night despite thousands of fans packing the pubs for England v USA, but officers plan to talk to pub managers about better publicising their clothing regulations.

Pub Industry Call for Duty Reduction in Face of Budget VAT Hike

A VAT hike to 20% would raise the price of a pint by 6p and cause the loss of 7,000 jobs a year, without a compensatory cut in duty reports the Morning Advertiser.

The report by Oxford Economics forms part of a budget submission to Chancellor George Osborne by three organisations — the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA).

The submission calls on Osborne to freeze duty and set out plans for a fairer tax system that recognises beer as a lower-strength drink.If VAT is increased to 20% at the Budget on 22 June, the three bodies call for a 4% compensatory drop in duty, which is 1.6p per pint.

Oxford Economics state that such a move would mean £114m to the Treasury in tax receipts next year and £134m in 2011/12.The BBPA is encouraging pub goers to lobby the Chancellor through the I’m Backing the Pub website.

Orchid Group to Buy 150 Pubs

The Publican Reports that Orchid Group, the privately-backed managed pub operator which recently acquired the Premium Bars & Restaurants business, is looking to add a further 50 pubs to its estate this year.

Additionally the group’s Parkmill Pub Management (PPM) operation is looking to buy another 100 pubs in 2011.

PPM’s managing director Magnus Wilson said he would be looking at “small groups as well as individual pubs” as part of his search.

“Pubs are closing in record numbers, but we believe our success proves that many of these great locals can be turned around rather than simply written off,” Wilson said.

“With the right passion, vision and investment we can revitalise pubs which might otherwise shut their doors for good,” he added.

Recent acquisitions by PPM have been turned into Orchid’s value and premium carvery formats, a strategy the group said had proved highly successful.

Licensing Control to Return to Home Office

Control of licensing is to return to the Home Office under the new coalition Government, a senior Tory source has told the Morning Advertiser.

Rumours that the Conservatives wanted to put the Home Office, the law-and-order department, back in charge of licensing were circulating before the election. These were stoked by the party telling the MA it wanted to "rationalise" the number of departments that deal with pubs in March.

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport was put in control of licensing under Tony Blair's Government, which pushed through the Licensing Act.

The Conservatives have said they want to "overhaul" alcohol licensing and moving the brief to the Home Office could be said to signal a tougher approach.

The well-placed Conservative Party source told the MA: "The licensing brief has been taken over to the Home Office."

The claim has been supported by the fact that the licensing brief has not been allocated to any of the new DCMS ministers flagged up on the department's website.
A Home Office spokeswoman was unable to confirm the claim.

Pub Trade Fear The Emergency Coalition Budget

The Publican is Reporting that the first Budget under the new coalition government will be unveiled on June 22.

Chancellor George Osborne today confirmed the date of the emergency Budget, which the Tories had promised within 50 days of taking power.

Many in the pub trade fear a hike in VAT will be included in Osborne’s first Budget speech in Parliament.

During an interview on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show yesterday, Prime Minister David Cameron did not rule out a rise in VAT.

On alcohol duty, it remains unclear whether the government will push ahead with Conservative plans to raise taxes on super-strength beers, ciders and “alcopops”.

The Lib Dems previously promised to review the system around alcohol tax to ensure it tackles “binge-drinking”, without “unfairly penalising responsible drinkers, pubs and important local industries”.

They also vowed to review the beer duty escalator and “explore the possibility” of a preferential rate of duty for draught beer.

However Osborne said today the “bulk” of measures to reduce the deficit would be spending cuts, not tax rises.

CAMRA Urges Pubs Minister Appointment

This morning, CAMRA wrote to the new Prime Minister, seeking the appointment of a Minister for Pubs. The appointment would help boost the protection of pubs, which play a vital role in the economic, social and cultural life of the nation, yet are closing at a rate of six a day.

CAMRA has highlighted that there are many exceptionally well qualified candidates for such a post, including Greg Mulholland MP and Nigel Evans MP. Greg Mulholland MP is the winner of CAMRA's 2010 Parliamentarian of the Year Award and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Save The Pubs Group. Nigel Evans MP is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group and co-chaired the Group's Community Pub Inquiry.

Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive said:

"It is a positive sign that the new Prime Minister chose to enjoy a pint in his local community pub on Election Night. CAMRA hopes that the new Government will include a Minister for Pubs tasked with safeguarding the future of the nation's pubs.

"A dedicated Minister for Pubs is vital to ensure that the fate of community pubs does not fall through the gaps between these Government Departments."

CAMRA is encouraging its 110,000 members to contact the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister (camerond@parliament.uk and cleggn@parliament.uk respectively) and ask them to support the reappointment of a Minister for Pubs.

Regulars Celebrate Bulldozed Pub

A Crewe pub which was bulldozed in the 80s opened for business again at the weekend – with a celebration spread across five town pubs.Ye Olde Chetwode Arms stood opposite St Paul’s Church on the High Town crossroads but was controversially bulldozed in May 1980 to make way for the West Street extension.

Thirty years on, former regular Steve Willett organised a reunion for customers, staff and their friends and family.Steve said: “It was such a popular pub that people continued talking about it 30 years later and I wanted the younger generation to know what the fuss was all about. I thought the best way forward was to recreate the atmosphere, with music and traditional pub games.”

Yorkshire Pubs Top UK Tourist Attraction

The Publican reports that the British Beer & Pub Association calls for pubs that bring tourists to the county to step forward

Pubs in Yorkshire are being urged to enter an awards ceremony for top tourist attractions in the area.

The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) is sponsoring the Pub of the Year category in the White Rose Awards, which is looking for the pub that best represents the county.

Lee Le Clercq, the BBPA's regional secretary for the North, said: “There’s no shortage of wonderful pubs in Yorkshire. Whether you’re looking for buzzing city centre venues, relaxing cosy locals, architectural gems, scenic wonders, ghostly apparitions or award-winning menus, God's Own County has them all. But if you don't enter, you can't be a winner.”

Last year the title was won by Ashley and Kelly McCarthy of Ye Old Sun Inn at Colton.

The pair recently celebrated even more success when they were named Publicans of the Year at the Publican Awards.

Pub Food boosts UK Brewery Profits

British pubs group Greene King Plc said it is confident of meeting its full-year profit forecasts, boosted by strong sales of food, although it remains cautious on the outlook for consumer spending reports Reuters today

Greene King, which has around 2,500 pubs in England and Scotland, said in a trading update on Wednesday that retail like-for-like sales were up 3.6 percent in the 49 weeks to April 11, boosted by strong food sales and a good trading performance at its Hungry Horse and Old English Inns brands.

The firm added that it saw second-half margins being broadly in line with last year and said this year's acquisitions were trading ahead of expectations.

In brewing, the company said it had continued to outperform the market, with own-brewed sales volumes up 3.9 percent.

However, Greene King said it remained cautious for the remainder of 2010 "as election uncertainty, rising taxes, public sector cutbacks and fragile consumer confidence may continue to limit consumer spending".

Pubs urged to engage with would-be MPs

BBPA produces action kit for members

A trade body is urging licensees to engage with election candidates prior to May 6 as part of a bid to “challenge misconceptions” and talk-up the industry.

The Publican reports that the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has produced an “action kit” for its members with ideas on how to make the most of a “crucial opportunity” before the election.

It recommends licensees write to local candidates, local newspapers and organise an election hustings in their own pub.

Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive, said: “The half a million of us working in the industry should use it as an opportunity to champion our cause, highlighting the contribution we make, and also to challenge misconceptions about the trade.

“It is an opportunity we must make the most of in run up to polling day.”

The BBPA also hopes to add to the 320 candidates who have already supported its I’m Backing the Pub campaign.

Pub Group Mitchells and Butler Reveal Business Reshape Plans

Midland pubs group Mitchells & Butlers has revealed new plans to reshape the company into a food-led business – months after a boardroom coup was completed.

In a strategic review statement the group said it would expand its food-led mid-market brands Harvester, Toby Carvery, Crown Carveries, Sizzling Pub Co, Premium Country Dining and Vintage Inns.

The moves come as a plan to refocus the firm around its food offer, which includes withdrawing from primarily drinks-led operations and converting into growth brands.

The plans, which follow a 55-day strategy review headed up by new M&B chairman John Lovering, also include developing smaller town centre variants of Harvester and Toby Carvery.

Carlsberg launches fruit spritzer Eve with Louise Redknapp

Carlsberg UK has launched Eve, a 100% natural fruit spritzer drink into the UK market, and has signed up Louise Redknapp as the brand ambassador.

Eve, which is 3.1% ABV and lightly sparkling, is being launched exclusively into the on-trade, following a three-month trial in Manchester last year, and success in other markets across Europe including Russia and Switzerland. The brewer adds that Eve, contains 135 calories per bottle, also satisfies female requirements for drinks that are “lighter, more natural” and lower in alcohol and calories”.

Paul Davies director of brands and insight at Carlsberg UK, said: "The drinks industry has largely ignored female consumers in the on-trade for a long time, which is criminal."

He said that women were visiting pubs and bars more frequently than ever, now accounting for over £10bn of on-trade revenue.

Pubco Tells Investors it is Disposing of Around 70 Bottom-End Pubs a Month

Punch Taverns said it is on track to sell around 1,800 non-core pubs as part of a disposal programme designed to slim down its leased operation from 6,800 sites to 5,000., reports the Publican

The UK’s largest pubco, which has been selling off around 70 bottom-end pubs a month as well as packages of high-end sites to regional brewers over the past year, told a City conference hosted by stockbroker Numis Securities that it was halfway through its planned disposal programme.

The group also confirmed that its new code of practice was currently being assessed by the BII and would be published on or around April 22, when it announces its interim results.

Details of new lease agreements, likely to come into effect in the next financial year, will also be revealed around the time of its interims.

Pub Landlords Welcome Government Support

Pub Landlords have welcomed news that the Government has set aside £4 million to help keep them running.

Pubs minister John Healey has announced a number of measures aimed at helping rural pubs including slashing “beer ties” which lock pubs into purchasing beer from the big pub companies. Other measures announced by the minister include business support to help communities buy into struggling pubs to keep them running.

Councils will also be given new powers through the planning system to intervene before a pub is demolished, giving a pause in the system for the residents to have their say.

Mr Healey said: “This package of tough, practical measures aims to put some real support behind our community pubs, giving publicans more support to diversify and punters more choice.

“Today’s measures are a much needed shot in the arm for publicans in these tough times. They will make it easier to diversify lower costs and cut red tape when it comes to branching out. It is also a boost for local communities, giving them a greater stake in the future of their local pubs often so important in bringing people together.”

Government Plans to Save the pub

The government unveiled its latest ideas to save Britain's rural pubs today, with promises of extra funding and an easing up of planning rules,reports Politics. Nearly 40 pubs are closing each week, resulting in job losses and millions of pounds lost to the economy, campaigners say. Many rural activists are also concerned the decline of the local pub will drive local communities further apart by taking away what is often the hub of local activity.

The government pledges include £3.3 million for business support to make pubs more successful and help communities buy into struggling pubs to keep them running today.
"Today's measures are a much needed shot in the arm for publicans in these tough times," said pubs minister John Healey.

"They will make it easier to diversify, lower costs and cut red tape when it comes to branching out. It is also a boost for local communities, giving them a greater stake in the future of their local pubs often so important in bringing people together."
A consultation is underway on proposals to cut the requirement for music licences in certain venues.

Councils will also be given new powers through the planning system to intervene before a pub is demolished, giving a pause in the system for the local community to have their say, government sources said.

Restrictions on sales which prevent premises continuing as pubs will be banned and planning laws reformed so pubs can branch out their business without planning permission into new commercial ventures, like restaurants or gift shops.

Record profits for JD Wetherspoons

JD Wetherspoon has reported record first half profits of £36.2m, a 41.4 per cent rise on last year, reports The Big Hospitality.

Profit was up 17.5 per cent on a pre-exceptional basis at the 746-strong managed pub chain which also successfully carried out a refinancing deal and reintroduced a dividend.

Turnover for the 26 weeks to 24 January was up 4.1 per cent to £488.1m including sales from 17 new pubs. Like-for-like sales increased marginally by 0.1 per cent with total sales.

Wetherspoon plans to open 50 pubs this year. It will issue a dividend of 12p a share for the financial year ending 25 July.

“Sales and profits in the six months under review were at record levels, notwithstanding the immense pressure on the pub business from government legislation, thanks, above all, to the great efforts of all of our staff,” said chairman Tim Martin.

“Trading in the six weeks to 7 March 2010 continues on a similar trend to last year, with like-for-like sales down 0.4 per cent and total sales increasing by 3.9 per cent.

"As a result of our sales, profits and free cash flow, together with our continued efforts to improve every area of the business, I remain confident of our future prospects.”

Pub Development Plan Halted After BBC Investigation

Plans by the UK's biggest pub company to convert a community pub into a housing development have been halted following a BBC investigation.

Programme makers uncovered a series of inaccuracies and misleading claims in Punch Taverns' planning application for the Cross Guns pub in Birmingham.
The application, which has attracted hundreds of objections, had been due to go before the local housing committee.

Punch said its application had been made in "good faith".
But once details of the investigation by BBC Inside Out West Midlands emerged, Birmingham City Council immediately halted the application whilst the claims could be investigated.

Who Will Save The Pub; Question Time For MPs

The Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) and the Save the Pub Group will host a Question Time style "Who will Save the Pub" debate for all three main political parties the Morning Advertiser reports

Lib Dem MP Greg Mulholland, chair of the Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, will take on the David Dimbleby role.Labour has yet to confirm who will appear for them but Tobias Ellwood for the Conservatives and Don Foster for the Lib Dems will appear on the 16 March.

The event will be by invitation and will include an audience made up of members of the public from CAMRA branches as well as pub trade organisation representatives.
The panel will be asked questions submitted by CAMRA members and others about the key issues facing British pubs.

“We want the great British pub to be seriously on the agenda at the forthcoming general election and it is time for all three main parties to say what they plan to do to support and save this important British institution," said Mulholland.

“Talk, whether in the pub or in parliament is easy, but we need action, so CAMRA and the Save the Pub Group are joining forces to put the party spokespeople on the spot to tell us how they will change things to support and save the pub.”

CAMRA chief executive Mike Benner added: "There is a growing consensus on the importance of pubs as places to responsibly enjoy a drink and their contribution to community life.

"What is now needed are clear proposals on how the future of well-run community pubs can be be safeguarded."

CAMRA National Pub of the Year

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today crowned the Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield, as its National Pub of the Year for 2009.

Last year, the Kelham Island Tavern picked up the same award, making it the first pub in CAMRA's history to win its most coveted accolade in consecutive years. Only two other pubs have ever won the award twice- the Fat Cat, Norwich (1998, 2004), and the Swan, Little Totham, Essex (2002, 2005).

CAMRA's National Pub of the Year competition analyses all the criteria that make a good pub including the quality of the beer, atmosphere, décor, customer service, and all-round value of the pub visit. The competition is overseen by CAMRA's 110,000-strong membership.

Greene King Boosted By Increased Food Sale

Greene King, which operates 2,472 pubs and restaurants across England, Wales and Scotland, said in a Q1 pre-AGM statement today that LFL trading in it's 888 retail premises, which trade under the Hungry Horse, Old English Inns, Loch Fyne Restaurants and Eating Inn brands, was up after 18 weeks trading by 4.4% overall on last year.

Food sales are the driver for this increase, being up 8.6%, and margins have slightly improved as well, but it is a different story in the 1,584 are tenanted or leased pubs, where EBITDA is up just 0.7%, which is a creditable performance in a UK beer market which has dropped 8% in the last quarter. Volumes through it's breweries have suffered, down 4.6%, though Belhaven in Scotland bucks the trend with volume up 3%.

GK says the pubs acquired over the last year are trading very well, but the outlook is uncertain with a number of significant headwinds, including public sector cuts, benefits reform and the impending VAT rise, are likely to affect future household spending.

Greene King shares closed last night at 428.8p valuing the company at £927 million.

Uk Pub Closure: Co-Ops Can Save Local Pubs

A year ago one Cumbrian pub was on the verge of closure, but following a TV intervention and a prestigious award, the local community is gearing up to buy it.

The Greyhound at Grizebeck was taken over by locals in January 2009, when it starred in UKTV Blighty show Save Our Boozer. Now locals are setting up a co-operative in order to buy the freehold, and have begun negotiations with the owners.

One year ago, a film company arranged a community meeting, to which 60 out of the 200 villagers turned up, and the end result was that the community agreed to run the pub on a leasehold basis.Initially staffed by volunteers, the business now employs two chefs, a manager and five bar staff.

Vic Dunkley, a former licensee and now member of the steering committee, said the pub was taking just £300 a week when they took it over, but weekly turnover has now increased to £2,300. It peaked at £6,000 per week at the height of summer.To top off its success, the pub has just been awarded Britain’s Best Traditional Business by the Countryside Alliance, in a nationwide competition judged by an expert panel including celebrity chef Clarissa Dickson Wright.

More than 300 Signed up to Facebook Page for Protest Backing Action Against the Pubcos

The Publican reports that disgruntled tenants and lessees are due to protest outside Parliament today as part of a "peaceful" demonstration against the behaviour of pubcos.

The protest, at Old Palace Yard opposite Parliament, is being organised by Inez Ward, leader of campaign group Justice for Licensees, and a former Enterprise Inns lessee.

The group is hoping the demo, which begins at 10am, will pressurise the government into taking action against the pubcos.

It is not known how many people will attend, but more than 330 people have joined a Facebook page for the event.

Ward told The Publican previously that her members wanted action now. “These tenants can’t afford to wait two years for a Competition Commission inquiry, they are losing their homes and facing bankruptcy," she said.

The former Newquay licensee organised previous protest marches on the HQs of Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns in January this year and boasts around 380,000 “members/supporters” for her JFL group.

Pubs chain JD Wetherspoon is to create 10,000 jobs as it opens 250 new pubs.
The company is planning to invest £250m on the new outlets over a five-year period.
The expansion will open up management opportunities, as well as positions for bar and kitchen staff.

The new pubs will be located across the UK, including Sheffield, Livingston, Leominster, Otley, New Malden, Liverpool and Newcastle

Pub Cigarette Vending Machine Ban for 2011

The Government plans to ban cigarette vending machines from pubs in England from 1 October 2011. The ban will cost a huge £709m to the industry, smokers and the Government in lost revenue.

Although the industry in general objects to the ban on vending machines, a lead-in time of almost two years will be welcomed by pubs that are currently struggling in the recession.

Pubs will still be able to sell tobacco products from behind the bar. However, from 2013, displays can't be visible to the public.

Pub industry bodies such as the British Beer and Pub Association said that the measures are another unwarranted obstacle to already-beleaguered pub industry.

A spokesperson from the BBPA said: “It’s unnecessary, and will make life even more difficult for hard-pressed publicans. Vending machines are well supervised, and governed by a tough code. Publicans are well used to selling a product restricted by age, and don’t need further restrictions.”

A pro-pub tenant MP has slammed the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) for turning down an invitation to debate its new industry code of practice in public.

The BBPA gave a presentation of its new Framework Code of Practice on the Granting and Renewing of Leases to MPs in the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group last night at a closed session (Pubcos set out 'fundamental reform' plans).

Beer Group member Greg Mulholland, also chair of the Save the Pub Group, challenged the BBPA to a public debate with the newly formed Independent pub Confederation (IPC) at the next Save the Pub Group meeting.
